Final Machinima

Installation Description

I created an installation to reflect the outputs of a Pachube feed which monitored and recorded the weather in terms of temperature, rain, electricity, wind speed, humidity, pressure, radiation and light. This feed opened a lot of options when deciding how to reflect Paul Virilio’s concept of “Pure War!”

An interpretation of “Pure War” that I found relevant and representable was the concept of global warming and its effects on human life. The way in which I chose to represent this was through the use of temperature, light and radiation; all of which I adapted from my Pachube feed.

Within my Pure War Sketchup model, I created 3 distinct spaces to represent each of these concepts. To exemplify lighting, the ground floor utilises proximity triggers, lights and the glowing properties of objects relative to the players position. Multiple colours and intensities make these ideas effective in relaying the concept of light.

In the second room, the inclusion of pulsing red glows and standard red lights portrays the idea of heat and temperature. To replicate this concept as it would occur in the real world, the heat increases (glows more) as the player approaches it. To enhance the relationship between my installation and the concept of global warming, I made the third room reflect radiation and pollution. With “toxic” like colouring and gas particle effects, I feel as though I depicted this effectively.
